Abstract:The concern in this paper is with the potential of serious detective fiction in a politically contentious South Africa. After the Second World War the crime novel (representing a world of force) took over from the detective story (representing a world of reason). In apartheid South Africa the adoption of the crime story as a popular genre was facilitated by the forms of popular cultural expression available in post-World War II South Africa. 'Drum', a new magazine launched in the early s, became the main vehicle for the crime story in South Africa. Significantly, however, in its most popular phase, the crime story in this magazine remained dominated by the conventions of detective fiction. One of the most important writers of detective fiction in South Africa is Wessel Ebersohn.
