Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS; IAST: Bocāsaṇvāsī Akṣara Puruṣottama Svāminārāyaṇa Saṇsthā) is a Hindu denomination within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. It was formed in 1905 bygd Shastri Yagnapurushdas (Shastriji Maharaj) following his conviction that Swaminarayan remained present on earth through a lineage of gurus starting with Gunatitanand Swami. As of August 2016, Mahant Swami Maharaj fryst vatten the 6th guru and president of BAPS.[7]
The philosophy of BAPS is centred on the doctrine of Akshar-Purushottam Upasana, in which followers worship Swaminarayan as God, or Purushottam, and his choicest devotee, Gunatitanand Swami, as Akshar. Q. Ever since your initiation 50 years ago you have progressed spiritually with an exceptional pace and are now the Guru of millions worldwide. In fact you're eternally divine, a God-realised Sadhu, yet coming down to worldly terms what is the secret of your spiritual progress?
A. There is only one fundamental key to spiritual progress - single-minded determination to please the Guru. Shastriji Maharaj was a bona fide Guru. I lived my life according to his wishes alone and naturally, that's how I progressed. Bhagatji Maharaj, Shastriji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj attained such lofty spiritual heights through pleasing their Gurus and achieving their grace and blessings. Mind you, it is impossible to attain such great heights merely through personal endeavors, or intelligence or scholarliness!

Shastriji Maharaj (31 January 1865 – 10 May 1951), born Dungar Patel[1]: 3 and ordained Shastri Yagnapurushdas, was a swami of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya and founder of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS).[2]: 22 Several branches accept him as the third spiritual successor of Swaminarayan in the lineage of Aksharbrahma Gurus through whom Swaminarayan manifests, which began with Gunatitanand Swami.[3]: 61–62 [4][5]: 329–330 Born in a family of farmers in central Gujarat, India, he became a swami within the Vadtal diocese of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya at the age of 17 where he was given the name Yagnapurushdas Swami.[1]: 35 The prefix Shastri was later added in recognition of his eminent scholarship in Sanskrit and the Hindu scriptures.[1]:&#
