  • Mystical sculptures; Catrin Howell solo

After more than ten years, once again there is an exhibition of ceramic mythical figures by Catrin Howell (born 1969) from London. Her unique sculptures are based on the mythical beasts which play a role in the Mabinogion, the great medieval literary tales from Wales, where she grew up as a farmer’s daughter.

Catrin Howell is fascinated by animals and the way they are used to convey stories: by the roles that they play in mythology, as iconic symbols, and by their capacity to transmit messages, in which they often play complex parts.

In mythology, the impossible becomes real; reality and impressions challenge each other. The worldwide universality of myths, stories, and symbolism is fascinating in part because of the commonality of themes in the myths of various cultures.

Howell’s work is labor-intensive and combined with her perfectionism it is exceptional to be able to present a new collection of her sculptures at Gallery Terra Delft.
