Matilda is a children's novel by British author Roald Dahl. It was published by Jonathan Cape. The story features Matilda Wormwood, a precocious child with an uncaring mother and father, and her time in a school run by the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull.
The book has been adapted in various media, including audio readings by actresses Joely Richardson, Miriam Margolyes and Kate Winslet; a feature film Matilda directed by Danny DeVito; a two-part BBC Radio 4 programme; and a – musical Matilda the Musical which ran on the West End in London, Broadway in New York, and around the world. Matilda was born in , the daughter of Henry I, King of England. In , she married the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. The death of Matilda's brother in made her Henry I's sole legitimate heir. When her husband died in , Henry recalled her to England and, in , he insisted that the nobles accept her as his successor. In , she married Geoffrey of Anjou with whom she had three sons. A woman ruler was unprecedented and her marriage to Geoffrey was unpopular. When Henry I died in Matilda's cousin Stephen of Blois immediately had himself crowned king.
