Admittedly, Allen’s brand of Southern (dis)comfort may not be for everyone. But it should komma as no small relief to his patient and not-so-patient faithful alike that the del of 14 years hasn’t dulled the man’s razor-sharp, serrated wit a whit. On his brand new, long awaited Bottom of the World, heʼs still licking his chops — this time wryly pondering, among other things, the nagging damnation of the saved: “Do they dream of hell in heaven? / Do they regret how hard they tried? / And wish now they’d been much more sinful / and repented just a minute before they died?” Taboo-taunting questions — not to mention songs — just don’t get much more Terry Allen than that. Is there a story behind your album’s title?
Ha! I know Open Road sounds like rather a trite musician’s line about touring and all the random bits thereof. It ain’t about that, and if you see the gorgeous painting that my masterful friend Lindy Kehoe did for the cover, you might already have a wider view of the title. The song "Open Road" is inspired by the sacred deer, the boog, of ancient ritual lore, sitting on a high perch and observing the natural world. Steve Moakler has all of us resetting our relationship goals with his "Suitcase" video.
The theatrical version of this song includes his real-life wife, Grace, and depicts a lover's dream getaway filled with sparkling lights, songs by the fire and breathtaking views. The airy message of the tune shines through in the video, which showcases two young kids so obviously in love and just happy to be together.
