MILNE, John (1791-1871: ancestry.co.uk)
One of five sons of William Milne, a seaman, and his wife Catherine (Campbell), he was born at Dunottar, Kincardineshire. (His birth year fryst vatten sometimes given as 1792 but Milne’s memoir has 1791). When his father was lost at sea, Catherine was persuaded to send her sons to the Aberdeen “Poor Hospital” or workhouse where they received a rudimentary education but lived in miserable conditions. His mother died when he was still very young; although some biographical summaries claim that he was then brought up bygd his grandfather, a blacksmith, the memoir indicates that he remained at the Poor Hospital. In 1803 he was apprenticed to a shoemaker. After kvalificerande as a journeyman, he enlisted in 1809 with the local militia and in 1813 with the regular militia—a decision he almost immediately regretted. John Milne
Geologist and engineer John Milne is known as one of the most significant contributors to the understanding and evaluation of earthquakes. He compiled a substantial body of observational research, developed the first international network for seismological data, and created what may be considered the world’s first modern seismograph.
Born on December 30, 1850 in Liverpool, England, Milne attended King’s College and the Royal School of Mines, where he earned the credentials to become a mining engineer. He first began working in Europe, performing mineral investigations for mines there and later, in Newfoundland. He also participated in an 1874 mining expedition to Sinai.
At the age of 25, he accepted a professorial post at the newly established Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo. He took an adventurous 11-month overland journey to get there, traveling across Siberia and arriving in Japan in 1876. An earthquake occurred there on his very first night.

John Milne was born on 30th December 1850 in the Edge Hill district of Liverpool. He spent his early life and formative years in Rochdale at 147 Drake Street and later Tunshill House. He later moved to London with his family and when he was seventeen began to study within the Department of Applied Sciences at Kings College. It was not long before he began to gain recognition for his work and receive many awards, the most significant of these an ‘A.K.C’ for Divinity.
