  • Georg Tappert was born in Berlin on 20 October 1880. Tappert discovered fine art after an apprenticeship as a tailor and two years spent working for different tailor's businesses, when Max Liebermann, the president of the "Berliner Secession" acknowledged that he "possessed a talent which was worth developing". The young Tappert took this letter of recommendation to Ludwig Schmitt-Reutte at the Academy in Karlsruhe.

    Tappert went to Saaleck Castle near Weimar for two years in 1903 to work as Paul Schultze-Naumburg's assistant but he missed the liberal atmosphere of the Karlsruhe Akademie. Tappert joined the "Deutscher Künstlerbund" when it was founded in 1904 by merging all the German Secession groups. The artist's early works from this period are influenced by Gauguin, Cézanne and Munch.     Georg Tappert was born in Berlin in 1880. He began his formal artistic training in 1901 at the Karlsruhe Academy and worked as an assistant to Paul Shultze-Naumburg in 1903. In 1905, Tappert moved to Berlin and then to Worpswede, where he helped found the Art School in Worpswede.

    In 1910, Tappert co-founded the School for Visual and Applied Arts in Berlin and the Neue Sezession (with Pechstein and others). He was appointed “first executive officer” of the Neue Sezession and exhibited with them until 1914. In 1911, Tappert helped found the Jury Free Art Show, and in 1912 he began teaching in Berlin. During the First World War, Tappert was drafted into the infantry, where he served until 1918.
