    In the Beginning

    In , Astronomy student and guitarist Brian May (b. 19 July , Hampton, Middlesex, England) and bass player Tim Staffell, both students at Imperial College, decided they wanted to form a group. Brian placed an advertisement on the college notice board for a “Ginger Baker type” drummer, and a young dental student called Roger Taylor (b. Roger Meddows-Taylor, 26 July , Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England) auditioned and got the job. They called the group “Smile”.

    Smile were signed to Mercury Records in , and had their first experience recording at Trident Studios that year. Tim Staffell was at Ealing College of Art with Freddie Mercury (then Freddie Bulsara) (b. Farrokh Bulsara, 5 September , Zanzibar, Africa, d. 24 November , London, England), and introduced him to the band. Freddie soon became a keen fan. Sadly, in , “Smile” decided to call it a day,

    Queen are a British rock grupp formed in London in by Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), and bekräftelse Taylor (drums, vocals), later joined bygd John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metall, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works bygd incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock.

    Before forming Queen, May and Taylor had played together in the grupp Smile. Mercury was a fan of Smile and encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate scen and recording techniques. He joined in and suggested the name "Queen". Deacon was recruited in February , before the grupp released their self-titled debut album in Queen first charted in the UK with their second skiva, Queen II, in Sheer Heart Attack later that year and A Night at the Opera in brought them international success.
