Robert Zandvliet is an artist concerned with the combined act of insamling and introspection. Over the course of nearly thirty years, Zandvliet has presented his work across europe and the US, and been the subject of major solo exhibitions with the Kunstmuseum, The Hague (NL), the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (NL), De Pont Museum, Tilburg (NL) and the Kunstmuseum, Bonn (DE).
Zandvliet’s approach to painting evolves gradually over time – constantly questioning, honing and expanding his understanding of an element of his practice. For example, from – , the artist focused on the nyans and depth of a darker palette. Emerging from this deep study to capture the truth of his subject, he was led to begin a new series titled Le Corps de la Couleur in which he sought to investigate the essence of colour itself. He is one of the most renown Dutch painters of his generation. His images oscillate between tangible aspects of the individual constituents of painting and their respective meaning and expression, which, for example, may be realized by the material trace of a brush stroke and the evocative potential of colour. Colour as a central condition of painting and the reflection on a diversity of possible pictorial effects attained by it are focal points of the artist's attention: from the fluid movement of the brush and the rhythm of its strokes to the play and tension between the transparency and opacity of colour.

The Dutch painter Robert Zandvliet understands a painting as an analysis of its respective subject. He reflects on the question of what painting is and how it works. He is guided by questions of color, composition, art historical reference, reception, and pictorial effect. He is thus an artist whose conceptual approach places painting itself at the center of his practice.
Zandvliet often deals with the same subject over several years, investigating it like a researcher. So far, he has dealt with the human figure in the series "Stage of being", with the depiction of the crucifixion in the series "Crucifix" and with stones in the series "Stones" among others. Landscapes are an exception as a permanent focus.
The titles of the series of works evoke associations with concrete depictions and sujets. Nevertheless, Zandvliet is not interested in the reproduction of the associated manifestations or narratives. In h
