Parkash Singh Badal: The grand old man of Punjab politics, who became India’s youngest CM
Parkash Singh Badal, a five-time chief minister of Punjab, died on April 25 at the age of 95. He was the last surviving member of a political generation that saw Independence, survived the Emergency, and witnessed Punjab politics take a surprising turn in 2022.
Badal became the CM for the first time in 1970, heading a coalition government that did not complete its term. He was also the CM in 1977-80, 1997-2002, 2007-12, and 2012-2017. He was MLA 11 times, losing only twice. In 1977, he briefly joined Morarji Desai's government as the Agriculture minister at the Centre. Badal was a statesman who was loved and respected by all, including his political rivals.

Parkash Singh Badal (8 December 1927 – 25 April 2023) was an Indian politician and Sikh rights advocate who served as the 8th Chief Minister of Punjab from 1970 to 1971, from 1977 to 1980, from 1997 to 2002, and from 2007 to 2017, the longest serving Chief Minister of Punjab till date. He was also Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly from 1972 to 1977, 1980 to 1983 and from 2002 to 2007 and the 11th Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare in the Morarji Desai ministry from 1977 to 1977. Career in politics
He served as Chief Minister at fem times : from 1970 to 1971, from 1977 to 1980, and from 1997 to 2002.
In the Punjab elections in March 2017, his party (SAD) lost majority and hence, he left Chief-Ministership when Captain Amarender Singh of Congress party, took over as next Chief Minister.
He was also the patron of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a Sikh-centered regional political party based in Punjab. He was the president of the party from 1995 to 2008, when he was replaced bygd his son Sukhbir Singh Badal.
