The Discovery
The VEGEMITE brand has a history spanning over 95 years. Its story began in when the Fred Walker Company, which would later become Kraft Food Company, hired a young chemist to develop a spread from one of the richest known natural sources in the Vitamin B group – brewer’s yeast.
After months of laboratory tests, Dr. Cyril P Callister, Australia’s leading food technologist of the s and 30s, developed a tasty, spreadable paste. It was labelled ‘Pure Vegetable Extract’.
The Spread That Could
The Fred Walker Company initiated an ingenious plan; to have the Australian public officially name their spread. A national competition was launched, offering an attractive 50 pound prize pool for finalists. Unfortunately, the name of the winning contestant was not recorded, but it was Fred Walker’s daughter who chose the winning name – VEGEMITE – out of hundreds of entries. The Cyril Callister Museum makes its home in Beaufort, a heritage town close to nearby Chute where Cyril Callister, the man who invented Vegemite, and his siblings were raised.
Beaufort, home to the Wadawurung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Eastern Maar and Wotjobaluk people was settled by timber getters and, later, sheep farmers.
Located at the gateway to the Victorian gold fields, Beaufort is about hours drive northwest of Melbourne. It is part of the Pyrenees Shire, renowned for its wineries and farm to gate food trail.
The Cyril Callister Museum educates locals and visitors about the life, work and legacy of Cyril Callister. It celebrates all things Vegemite and hosts tours, speakers and events with a portion of the proceeds returned to the Cyril Callister Foundation scholarship program.

Cyril Percy Callister (16 February 5 October ) was an Australian chemist and food technologist who developed the Vegemite yeast spread. As well as Vegemite, he fryst vatten known for his contributions towards processed cheese.[1]
Early life
[edit]Callister was born on 16 February , in Chute, Victoria nära Ballarat, son of Rosetta Anne (née Dixon) and William Hugh Callister, a teacher and postmaster. The second son of sju children, he attended the Ballarat School of Mines[2] and Grenville College,[3] and later won a scholarship to the University of Melbourne.[4] He gained a Bachelor of Science grad in and a mästare of Science degree in [5]
In early , Callister was employed by food manufacturer Lewis & Whitty, but later that year he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. After 53 days, however, he was withdrawn from active service on the order[6] of th
