    Gabriel Narutowicz was born on 17 March in Telsze, Vilna Governorate, Russian Empire (present-day Telsiai, Samogitia, Lithuania). Narutowicz was born to a Polish-Lithuanian noble family, and his brother Stanislaw Narutowicz&#;became a citizen of Lithuania after independence in He joined the Polish Socialist Party and became Minister of Public Works under Wladyslaw Grabski, and in he was elected President of Poland. Opponents to this election blocked the streets and threw mud at his motorcade, as they opposed his leftist view on politics. On 16 December , Narutowicz was killed by painter Eligiusz Niewiadomski, a far-right assassin, while viewing an art gallery.
