19th • Irish language television programme No Béarla is a four-part documentary style programme broadcast on Irish language television channel TG4 and produced by Dearg Films RTÉ/TG4. It follows presenter Manchán Magan[1] as he journeys throughout Ireland attempting to show that Irish is spoken only by a minority of the population. The title is derived from the English negative "No" and the Irish word for the English language, Béarla. The theme tune is "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day. The first series was originally broadcast on Sunday nights between and , and repeated on Wednesday evenings between and It aired from 7 January until 28 January The second series was first broadcast on Fridays at , beginning on 28 March Manchan travels to Dublin, and his starting point in his search for Irish speakers is a map shop there.[2] In which Manchán travels to Dundalk and Belfast. Magan has made over 70 travel documentaries focusing on issues of world cultures and globalisation, 12 of them packaged under the Global Nomad series[1] with his brother Ruán Magan.[2] He presented No Béarla, a documentary series about travelling around Ireland speaking only Irish. He writes regularly for The Irish Times[3] and presents the podcast/radio show 'The Almanac of Ireland', on RTÉ Radio 1[4] He has written three books in Irish, Baba-ji agus TnaG, Manchán ar Seachrán and Bí i nGrá.
