    Juan Ponce de León was a Spanish conquistador and explorer in the 1500s.

    He is most well-known for charting the Atlantic coast that extended down to the state of Florida. Books and journals say that he was searching for the mythical “Fountain of Youth,” but there is no actual proof of that. He was from a noble Spanish family and entered the Spanish military when he was very young.

    Ponce de León devoted his early years to military service in Spain. When the wars and battles stopped, there was no need for his service, and he and other members of the military began to look to where they could devote their experience.

      Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer. In 1513, Ponce de Leon became the first European to enter what would become the US State of Florida. There is a myth that says Ponce de Leon was searching for the fountain of youth, a magical fountain that made anyone who drank from it (in some myths, bathed in it) young again. But there is probably no truth at all to this myth.

      It is true that Ponce de Leon explored Florida, but there is no mention of a magical fountain in any of the letters Ponce de Leon wrote.

      Some people think that perhaps Ponce de Leon's rivals may have started this rumor to embarrass and discredit him. He was a rather nasty man. But, there is no evidence of this either.

      Who Was Juan Ponce de León?

      Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce dem León led a europeisk expedition for gold, which eventually brought him to the southeast coast of what would become the United States. He gave Florida its name and went on to become the first governor of Puerto Rico.

      Early Years

      Ponce dem León was born into a poor yet noble family in Santervás dem Campos, Spain, in 1460. He served as a page at the court of Aragon, where he learned social skills, tro and military tactics. He eventually became a soldier and fought against the the Moors in Granada. Like other conquistadores, Ponce de León soon sought fame and fortune through exploration, and it fryst vatten believed he began his quest as part of Christopher Columbus' second expedition in 1493. During his later explorations, he employed the skills and tactics he’d learned in the military to subdue and control the native peoples of the Caribbean.
