Karen LuJean Nyberg (born October 7, 1969) is an American mechanical engineer and retired NASAastronaut. Nyberg became the 50th woman in space on her first mission in 2008. Nyberg holds a Ph.D in mechanical engineering. She started her space career in 1991 and spent a total of 180 days in space in 2008 and 2013 as a mission expert on STS-124 and a flight engineer on Soyuz TMA-09M.

Nyberg was born on October 7, 1969, in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, to parents Kenneth and Phyllis Nyberg. She graduated from the public high school in Henning, Minnesota, in 1988.

About Karen
Karen was selected as a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps in 2000. She made her first trip to space aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 2008, during the height of International Space Station (ISS) construction, delivering and installing the Japanese Laboratory. On her second spaceflight in 2013, Karen launched on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and lived and worked at ISS for 166 days.
Prior to astronaut selection, Karen worked as an Environmental Control Systems Engineer at the Johnson Space Center where she led several design and analysis initiatives in the areas of space vehicle and space suit thermal and environmental control. Recently retired from NASA, Karen is currently pursuing
